Piterak® Slim

Piterak® Slim is a large dimensioned terracotta cladding (up to 1520 mm long and 414 mm tall) with horizontally overlapping joints. It is available in eleven colours and two finishes (smooth and grooved).
CSTB Technical Approval 2/10-1403.

Its strengths

  • An excellent thickness/performance ratio: in spite of its minimal thickness (3 cm), Piterak® Slim is particularly wind resistant (up to 2359 Pa) and impact resistant (up to Q4 in a standard installation).
  • Competitively priced for large areas (over 500 sq. m.) due to its optimized manufacturing process.
  • Adaptable to all façades, since it can be cut both horizontally and vertically on site.
  • Several possibilities for customization upon request: colours, textures, contouring and dimensions (up to 1800 mm long and 500 mm tall).

INSTALLATION

Système de mise en oeuvre

Fixing system

The cladding process based on double-wall terracotta products with a horizontal overlap, held using special clips, to a vertical steel framework secured to the main structure, with insulation fitted behind the framework.
The vertical framework profiles run along the vertical joints and protect the insulation and supporting wall and acts as a guide for water running off.
There are various accessories not supplied by TERREAL (in italics in the diagrams): thermal insulation, fixing brackets, steel or PVC profiles for flashings and various finishes, as well as various screws and fixing anchors.

Installation

Piterak® Slim installations must comply with CSTB Technical Approval no. 2/10-1403.
Fitting to a concrete or masonry support covered with a vertical framework must comply with the rules in CSTB specifications nos. 3194/3586 (metal framework, with restrictions on use), including the allowance of an air gap of a minimum of 2 cm. The framework is made up of special aluminum profiles, fitted to standard fixing brackets or special yokes.
The brackets are fitted beforehand in a staggered pattern on either side of the profile.
The layout of these fixings, not supplied by TERREAL, must be as required by the project’s engineer of record taking into account thermal and mechanical requirements (strength of the anchors, wind, and applicable seismic conditions).

Piterak® Slim products are fitted from the bottom upwards; the bottom of each Piterak® Slim product is located into pre-fitted bottom clips, and then pushed back against the profiles.
Before screwing the upper clips into the profile, using two self-tapping 5.5 mm stainless steel pan head screws, the clips must be height adjusted in accordance with the spacing gauge and offset sideways against the positioning lug on the side of the support surface in question.
The clips grip the top of the product with a spring effect but allow a sideways adjustment to ensure an even 10 to 20 mm vertical joint. Uniformity of the horizontal joint, 12 mm (±2 mm), is ensured by use of the spacing gauge.
Piterak® Slim may easily be cut vertically at critical points (approx. 20 cm minimum), or horizontally (at the edge of a cell) using a diamond-tipped saw, lubricated with water.

Guide de Pose

Fitting guide for a straight horizontal run

Draw a horizontal line; mark the spacing for the profiles to give the width of vertical joint required. Then, after fixing the brackets in a staggered pattern along the line of the profile, fit the insulation.

Then install the profiles and adjust for level and plumb. Insert and fix the clips on the profiles (keeping the joint even) to suit the Piterak® Slim profiles.

The final row of terracotta products (at the top of the structure or below an opening) is fixed using top clips.

Points Singuliers

  • Bottom detail

A perforated metal rail is fixed to the support beforehand, protecting the insulation while maintaining the air gap.
Fitting the fi rst row of Piterak® Slim uses standard clips at the bottom, fixed close to the bottom end of the vertical profiles.
Fixing, using standard clips, then continues at regular intervals for each module.

    Bottom detail
  • Top detail

At the top, the Piterak® Slim system must be protected by a water run-off arrangement, sealed to the supporting structure, covering the products and overhanging them by at least 20 mm.
The final row of Piterak® Slim is fixed at the top, using two top clips, requiring less space above the product than standard clips (to be taken into consideration when planning the layout).

    Top detail
  • Treament of opennings with a bare interior

The treatment of Piterak® Slim/joinery joins using metal trims requires that the insulation is continued underneath, so as to prevent thermal bridges and must comply with the usual recommendations for ventilation of the air gap.
The treatment of reveals requires that the standard profile is offset in relation to the ends of the Piterak® Slim products, and this is allowed by the system. Consideration must be given to the space required for fitting Piterak® Slim under the sill, when planning the layout.

Treament of opennings with a bare interior
  • Treatment of opennings with a bare exterior

If the joint is actually flush to the bare wall, its aesthetic connection to the Piterak® Slim is simple. The drainage and air gap ventilation recommendations must be complied with.
The space taken up by the joinery’s peripheral sealing arrangements, particularly for the lintel, requires planning an overhang for the profiles and Piterak® Slim products, and this is allowed by the system. Consideration must be given to the space required for fitting Piterak® Slim under the sill, when planning the layout.

Treatment of opennings with a bare exterior
  • Treatment of corners with terracotta

Making external corners requires the use of Piterak® Slim left and right-handed corners, that are cut left and right respectively at 45° through the thickness of the product (mitre cut).
Both products fi t onto the same Piterak® corner profile or two adjacent Piterak® standard profiles. Finishing external corners with metal profiles is also possible, as is a combination using a Maestral® corner, a system also covered by ‘Technical Approval’. Fitting internal corners requires fitting two profiles and Piterak® Slim products from adjacent grids up against each other.
