Zéphir®Zéphir®Zéphir®

Zéphir®

Zéphir® is only 15 mm thick, small-size, single-skin terracotta cladding (up to 295 x 595 mm) with open horizontal joints.

With contemporary or more traditional tints, Zephir® is available in 10 colours with a smooth, sanded or ridged finish.

2 new finishes

Zéphir® is now available in wavy and groove finishes

> It catches the light, creates shade and gives life to structure

> The fragmented effect produced by the joints in the shingles is thus unified and the facade grows in continuity and in volume.

Its strengths

  • An economical solution
  • Quick and simple to use, thanks to its lightness and horizontal rail fixing system: in a running section, the fitting time is assessed at 75 minutes per square meter.
  • Highly modular: 4 formats; ten colours; three finishes (smooth, sanded, ridged); two widths of horizontal rail (wide and extra-wide) for two different aesthetics; can be fitted with straight or staggered joints.
  • Its flexibility: it is possible to cut it horizontally and vertically on site which makes it particularly suitable for renovation work.

INSTALLATION

Système de mise en oeuvre

Fixing system

The cladding system based on single-skin terracotta components, including longitudinal bars on the back enabling them to be suspended on horizontal rails, supported on a vertical framework secured to the main structure and behind where insulation may be fitted.
There are two versions of the horizontal rail, for a narrow horizontal joint (5 mm, standard rail, or prominent (16 mm, rail XI) (for close terracotta tolerances).
There are various accessories not supplied by TERREAL (in italics in the diagrams): thermal insulation, mastic, fixing brackets, wooden or steel structural verticals, steel or PVC profiles for skirts and various finishes, various screws and fixing anchors.

Installation

Installation of Zéphir® must comply with that envisioned by CSTB Technical approval no. 2/08-1330. Positioned horizontally with an average theoretical spacing of 25 or 30 cm (recommended spacing indicated on the pallet, for fitting with a standard rail). The rails are fixed to a vertical framework leaving a 1 to 2 cm air gap between the ends of the rails on each row.
Installation on a concrete or rendered masonry substrate of the vertical structure made of wooden batten or steel profiles, must comply with the rules contained in CSTB specifications nos. 3316/3422/3585 (steel structure) – or nos. 3194/3586 (steel structure, flanged design), with a 2 cm minimum air gap. Fixing these profiles using brackets spaced between 30 and 90 cm apart, depending on the mechanical strength requirement, is generally staggered and spaced according to a technical study taking into account the mechanical strength and thermal requirements (strength of the anchors, wind, and seismicity).

A steel structure based on “Z” profiles, fixed directly to the support wall may also be used. Terracotta products are fitted from bottom to top, suspended on the upper rail by their upper bar and locked with two dots of mastic (type Sikafl ex® Pro 11 FC) on the lower bar on the upper part of the lower rail.
The addition of intermediate rails in addition to the usual rails, may increase resistance to wind (up to classification V4) and to impacts (up to class Q3).
At critical points, Zéphir® may be easily cut vertically (12 cm minimum) or horizontally (using the intermediate hooking bars for fixing), using a diamond-tipped saw lubricated with water.

Guide de Pose

Standard fitting guide

Using a laser or spirit level, trace a horizontal line as a starting reference for fitting the profiles The starting point is determined according to the layout drawing.

Mark the spacing chosen for the profiles. Then offer up the brackets to drill for fitting the anchors (spacing of brackets to be determined by calculation).

Adjust to ensure the profiles are vertical.

Place the brackets in a staggered pattern along the line of the profile.

Position and adjust the vertical of the profiles at the ends of the wall and fix the profiles to the brackets.

Adjusting the vertical of the intermediate profiles is done last.

Fix the rails to the profiles using the fitting spacing recommended on the pallet (in theory 250 to 300 mm with the standard rail). The use of a spacing is recommended.

Position the Zéphirs® on the horizontal rails having put two dots of Sikaflex Pro 11 FC mastic in the throat of the lower bar.

Fitting on a wooden structure

Zéphir® can be fitted on aluminum rails fixed to a framework of wooden battens. The wooden structure must comply with the rules issued in CSTB specification no. 3316 of February 2001 and modifications nos. 3422 and 3585 (wooden structure).

Points Singuliers

  • Bottom detail

A perforated metal rail is fi xed to the support beforehand, protecting the insulation while maintaining the ventilation of the air gap (ventilation holes to be sized according to the height of the cladding). The lower rail running along the bottom of the fi rst row of Zéphir® (whole or with the height cut down), must be offset back from the products (29 or 40 mm depending on the version of rail).

    Bottom detail
  • Top detail

In the upper part, the Zéphir® system must be protected by a water run-off arrangement, sealed to the support wall, covering the products and overhanging by at least 20 mm (ventilation holes to be sized according to the height of the cladding). If products are cut horizontally, they must be fi xed using the intermediate lugs.

    Top detail
  • Treament of opennings with a bare interior

The treatment of Zéphir®/joinery junctions is usually done using metal trims all around the perimeter, in conjunction with an insulation to prevent thermal bridges fi tted underneath. The treatment of joinery reveals in Zéphir®, without using metal trims is possible but more technical.

Treament of opennings with a bare interior
  • Treatment of opennings with a bare exterior

If the opening is actually fl ush to the bare wall, their aesthetic connection to the Zéphir® system is simple. The space taken up by the lintel joinery sealing arrangement, however, reduces the margin for adjusting the framework carrying the Zéphir® at this point.

Treatment of opennings with a bare exterior
  • Treatment of corners with terracotta

Producing external corners in Zéphir® requires removal (disc cutting) of the lugs on a 2 cm length corresponding approximately to the depth of the other product forming the corner. Two dots of mastic complete the assembly. Finishing external corners with metal profi les is also possible, as is a combination using a Maestral® corner, a system also covered by ‘Technical Approval’. The fi tting of internal corners is less specifi c and simply requires maintaining the same vertical joint between the two adjacent grids as in a continuous run.
